They have tons of energy and are known for their sweet disposition. The breed was known and is still known today as a top breed for narcotics detection. They also make a wonderful addition to any family

Beagles' Appearance

The Beagle is a hardy breed known for its uniformity and squarely build frame. The Beagle has a short hard coat that can vary in color. Coat colors range from tri-color, black and tan, lemon and white, or red and white. The skull of the Beagle is broad and a bit rounded. The muzzle is square and uniform. The nose is all black in color and has big full nostrils which are why the breed is known for its keen sense of smell. The ears are long and pendant. The Beagle has eyes that are known for its pleading expression. The tail should never be curled over the back. The Beagle also has a very loud howl which stems from their hunting background.

Beagle's Temperament

The Beagle is a sweet dog that loves everyone. Full of energy, the Beagle makes a wonderful companion dog especially for those with children. The Beagle is known to be a very happy dog. The breed will fair well with children, adults, and other dogs but should not be left alone with other non-canine pets. If they are raised from birth around another non-canine pet then there should not be any problems. The Beagle is very willful and can be difficult to train. They need firm consistent training from a very early age.

Beagles hate being alone, so if you will be gone all day long, you may want to think about investing in two Beagles to keep each other company. The Beagle has a very loud howling bark that was used to alert when hunting but for a household pet this can be a bit annoying to neighbors and family members. Remember that they come from a hunting background and have a tendency to follow a scent. They may go off exploring without you even noticing. You may want to keep the dog on a leash or in a harness to prevent this.

Beagle's Role

The Beagle is a wonderful family dog that is full of energy and excitement. They are known to be great with kids and other dogs but may not fair so well around other non-canine pets. The breed carries a sense of willingness and determination. They need a lot of attention and love and will need a companion if the household will be empty all day. Beagles are very loyal and smart. They stem from the hunting lines so their can be alert and have a tendency to follow a scent that interests them.
